Austin man offers $1 billion for breast cancer cure
From the good 'ol Houston Chronicle.Mr Dewey says he'll come up with the cash. Hey, he's started a non-profit foundation, so he's pretty much most of the way there. He reasons that the hold up with a cancer cure has been the lack of financial incentive. Um,....right.
"He launched its Web site last year for the foundation, which he says is
offering other "Victory Project Awards" worth $1 billion each to anyone
who cures diabetes, reduces greenhouse emissions from petroleum-powered
automobiles by 95 percent, or creates a car capable of getting 150
miles per gallon."
From chron.com: "State District Judge George Godwin ordered that Virginia Cammack,
35, not talk to or contact the 17-year-old boy while free on $20,000
bail Cammack was charged Tuesday with having an improper relationship
with a student, a second-degree felony."
The article. First it was tomatoes, now peppers. Obviously this is a government conspiracy to rid the country of illegal immigrants from Mexico by tainting the core ingredients of salsa. We're through the looking glass, people. Don't act all surprised when pork stew meat in Florida has an outbreak of sour vanilla salmonella. That'll get those Cubans out!
Have you seen the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger film "The Running Man"? Hell yes, you have! Well, remember at the beginning Arnold's character Ben Richards is hanging out in prison after refusing to gun down some food rioters? All the prisoners wore collars that would deliver more than a shock if they moved beyond the "invisible fence" (decapitating explosion was what it was, actually.) Well now in the near future you'll be able to remember that scene while you wear a bracelet while flying commercial. The Consumerist (see feed to the right of this site's page) picked up on this article about a new bracelet that passengers can wear that not only holds your personal information, it can deliver an incapacitating shock if you get unruly or have brown skin. No word yet on if there will be a $15 fee for the bracelet or if said fee will be refunded if you're accidentally tazed when the air marshall digs in his pockets for a pen.
Speaking of flying and The Consumerist, here's another entertaining piece you should read.
Realizing that it was too difficult to get away with robbing a gas station, Angela Eversole took to "older" professional methods of receiving compensation. So along comes Kenny with a gas card loaded up with enough dough for 25 gallons. Score! But then, Busted! In addition to being charged with prostitution, Angela was charged with "doing business without an occupational license", leading me to believe that Kentucky must have some Nevada-esque laws on the books somewhere. Or not. If cops bust your meth lab, do you get the same charge? What if your meth lab has a chemist's license?
At least when you drunk-drive a cooler, you're only likely to hurt yourself. Golf carts are much more dangerous, as shown is this article from CBS affiliate wcco.com. The unfortunate passenger in the golf cart suffered a severe head injury died after falling from the cart while riding back from watching fireworks on the 4th of July. The driver was arrested and has pending charges of DUI and criminal vehicular homicide. Another case of it being better to just walk, or even better, just stay in your chair.
The Cape Cod Times had
this article about a kid who pushed a fishing senior citizen into the water. "Police said the boy ran up behind the 71-year-old victim, (known as Ray, who was
just doing his job) fishing off the dock with his grandson, and pushed him off the dock and
into the ocean."
The teen ran off but was identified by several witnesses and promptly arrested. When given the opportunity to make a phone call, the hooligan ignored the sign stating that his call may be monitored for quality assurance. He called a friend to brag about his unoriginal prank. Now that's just senseless.
